Chapter 148: Chapter 148: Raina Goes to the Police Station, Adrian Grant Narrowly Escapes Death Raina Lowell had just been brought home by her father and the others; they hadn’t even stepped through the front door when the police hurried over.
Seeing Raina Lowell’s hands covered in blood and knowing she was the one who committed murder, the police handcuffed her right away.
"Miss Lowell, the Grant Family reported that you committed murder intentionally. Please come with us!"
Raina Lowell knew she had to bear the legal responsibility.
Handing her son over to her father, tears welled up in her eyes.
"Dad, please take care of Evelyn."
Tears flooded Mr. Everett’s eyes as he took the child, but he could no longer hold his daughter’s hand.
His daughter had already confessed, so all they could do was have a lawyer make a defense for her, to see if they could later secure bail or negotiate with the Grant Family.
He wiped away his tears and nodded, saying:
"Don’t worry, we will take good care of Evelyn. No matter the cost, we will make sure you come out safely."
Raina Lowell didn’t know if she could ever get out.
She turned to Ethan Everett and said:
"Alaric Jennings is still in the hospital; go and check on him for me. If I can’t get out, have him draw up the divorce papers and send them to the prison for me to sign."
"Tell him, I’m sorry. If there is a next life, let me make it up to him then!"
Her hands were cuffed, and she choked up as she finished speaking. She gave her son one last longing glance before turning away toward the police car.
"Mom..."
Evelyn rushed forward, hugging her leg and crying loudly.
"Mom, don’t leave me. I’ve already lost my sister; I can’t lose you too. Mom, take me with you. I don’t want to be separated from you again."
Raina Lowell stood there stiffly, looking down at her son clinging to her leg, her heart pierced with pain.
She never wanted her child to become an orphan.
But Adrian Grant pushed her too far.
Without killing him herself, she would never escape his control in this lifetime.
She did not regret killing Adrian Grant.
She was only sorry for her child, unable to always be by his side.
Raina Lowell squatted down, unable to embrace her son due to the handcuffs, she rubbed against him, tears streaming down like rain.
"Evelyn, stay with your grandparents. Maybe one day, I’ll come back."
"When mom isn’t with you, eat well, take care of yourself. If you miss mom, you can have your grandparents bring you to see me."
But she didn’t know if Adrian Grant would die.
If Adrian Grant died, she might be sentenced to death too.
If Adrian Grant didn’t die, maybe she’d be out in ten or twenty years.
By then, her Evelyn would be grown. That would be nice.
"Mom, don’t..."
Little Evelyn was still unwilling to let go, holding tightly onto his mother’s neck, his face full of tears.
Nobody knew when she would return after being taken away.
Mr. Everett hurriedly had the servants call his wife out.
Mrs. Everett rushed out, seeing the police in the yard, seeing her daughter with blood on her hands, cuffed.
Heart aching and fearful, she went over to hug her daughter, filled with guilt.
"I’m sorry, Raina. It’s my fault I didn’t take good care of Evelyn. What happened to you? Why are they taking you away?"
Seeing her whole family there, Raina Lowell felt afraid she might never see them again after leaving, wanting to take this chance to say a proper goodbye.
Knowing her daughter had killed Adrian Grant, Mrs. Everett was also afraid she wouldn’t return, hugging her tightly, refusing to let go.
Next to them, Mr. Everett and Ethan Everett couldn’t help but shed tears as well.
It had taken such effort for their family to reunite.
If it weren’t for Adrian Grant’s overbearing ways, Raina wouldn’t have ended up like this today.
They hated Adrian Grant, yet they hoped he’d survive and not press charges against Raina.
Time went on for too long; the police grew impatient and urged them to take Raina Lowell into the police car.
"No, mom, don’t go."
Frightened he’d never see his mother again, Evelyn, held by the adults, cried and struggled for her.
Sitting in the police car, Raina Lowell watched her son needing her, watched her parents shedding tears for her.
She wasn’t less saddened than they were, her tears pouring like a fountain.
Until the police car drove off.
Until her family disappeared from view.
Raina Lowell bowed her head, weeping bitterly.
The Everetts, however, remained extraordinarily calm.
Mr. Everett signaled to his son, "Go quickly to the Grant Family, find out about Adrian Grant’s situation, and report to us immediately."
Ethan Everett understood and quickly left.
They knew very well that if Raina were to be safe, Adrian Grant must be safe too.
If Adrian Grant recovered, they could use him to free Raina.
Evelyn was still crying, shouting that he wanted to find his mother.
Mrs. Everett held him, comforting him continually.
Mr. Everett embraced them and led them inside.
The Grant Family.
When Ethan Everett arrived, Elias Sheridan had just finished operating on Adrian Grant.
He came out of the operating room, looking at Mr. and Mrs. Grant and Ethan Everett, and truthfully reported:
"He’s not out of danger yet; he’s lost too much blood, and the wounds are in the most critical places. How could Raina Lowell have been so ruthless?"
Ethan Everett wanted to defend his sister.
Before he could speak, Mrs. Grant, in a daze, said:
"Raina Lowell just wants him dead. Once my son is gone, no one will fight her for custody."
"Then she can take the child and marry another man without a second thought."
Ethan Everett couldn’t help but say, "The child has always been with Raina. Adrian hasn’t fulfilled any of his duties as a father. What right does he have to take the child away?"
Mrs. Grant retorted, "That’s because we didn’t know the child was a Grant. If we had known earlier, we would have taken good care of them."
If her son could recover, she would not pursue Raina Lowell’s criminal responsibility for the sake of the child.
But if her son died, she would not let Raina Lowell off.
Mrs. Grant was still worried about her son and bypassed Elias Sheridan to enter the operating room.
Ethan Everett looked at Elias Sheridan, "Will he make it?"
Elias Sheridan stepped forward, took off his gloves, and tossed them into the trash, appearing calm and composed.
"The injury is very serious, but I’ll do my best. He should pull through."
Ethan Everett sighed in relief; as long as he could live, it was fine.
He informed Elias Sheridan, "Then please get Adrian better as soon as possible. My sister has been taken away by the police. Only if Adrian survives can she be released from the police station."
Elias Sheridan naturally understood this reasoning.
The Everetts were likely waiting for Adrian Grant to wake up and sign the understanding agreement.
That man, entirely lovestruck, would surely forgive Raina Lowell as well.
He assured Ethan Everett not to worry and return home; Adrian Grant would not die.
Ethan Everett returned home and relayed the news to his parents.
Now, the only thing they could do was wait for Adrian Grant to wake up.
With Elias Sheridan’s excellent medical skills, under his treatment, Adrian Grant regained consciousness in just three days.
However, his body was still very weak.
He lay on the bed, his thin and handsome face was bloodlessly pale. When he opened his eyes, he took a long time to look at the person by his bedside.
Elias Sheridan smiled and asked, "How does it feel to be stabbed by the woman you love? Your heart must be shattered?"
Upon hearing this, Adrian Grant involuntarily recalled the events of that day.
Being stabbed by the woman he loved, his heart indeed shattered.
But he was still in pain, so he must not be dead.
Yet after this incident, he clearly understood that he and Raina probably had no future.
Thinking about the child, Adrian Grant mustered all his strength and finally squeezed out a little voice after a long time.
"Ev-Evelyn?"
Elias Sheridan said to him, "She’s with the Everett Family. Even if he’s your son, you shouldn’t have snatched him away."
"If I were Raina Lowell, I would indeed want to kill you."
Putting himself in her shoes, if someone suddenly took away the child he had given birth to with such effort, how could a mother not hate?
He now somewhat understood why Raina Lowell acted so harshly.
Adrian Grant thought it was good for the child to have gone back.
He truly was unfit to be a father.
Having no strength to say anything more, he lay there and slowly closed his eyes again.
At noon, Mrs. Everett took Evelyn to the hospital to see Alaric Jennings.
Now, to rescue Raina, they had to reconcile with The Grant Family.
But they were very aware that Adrian Grant took Evelyn away because Raina was going to marry Alaric Jennings.
So Mrs. Everett wanted to ask Alaric Jennings to divorce her daughter.
Alaric Jennings was leaning against the headboard; his hand injured by Adrian Grant still hadn’t healed from the fracture.
He always had a foreboding feeling; Ethan Everett had previously come to him, saying that Raina had killed Adrian Grant and had been taken away by the police.
But he was in the hospital and couldn’t do anything.
Now, seeing his mother-in-law bring the child, Alaric Jennings thought there was some news about Raina and anxiously asked:
"Mom, is Raina okay? She’s fine, right?"
Mrs. Everett let the child play by the side and looked at Alaric Jennings apologetically.
"Raina is indeed fine in there, but I’ve heard Adrian Grant has woken up. Alaric, can I ask you for a favor?"
Alaric Jennings immediately agreed, "Sure, just tell me. As long as I can do it, I’ll give it my all."
"Divorce Raina. Perhaps only this way will Adrian Grant let her go."
The son later went to The Grant Family.
They knew Adrian Grant still had feelings for their Raina; to have their Raina come out, they surely needed to give Adrian Grant some hope.
However, Alaric Jennings’s face fell, and without thinking, he refused:
"Mom, divorcing won’t get Raina out. I think I should be discharged now. I’ll find a lawyer and fight this case with The Grant Family. I’ll get Raina out myself."
It was impossible for him to divorce.
He had only just managed to marry Raina, and they hadn’t even lived a day of married life before Raina ended up at the police station.
Now his mother-in-law was asking him to divorce.
He couldn’t resign himself to it.
Mrs. Everett didn’t insist.
Perhaps there were other ways.
They would first wait for the attitude of The Grant Family.
Two days later, Ethan Everett went to The Grant Family again.
He saw Adrian Grant, who was now able to speak normally.
Sitting by the bed, he spoke in a low voice:
"Adrian, for the sake of our many years of friendship, please sign this understanding agreement. Besides, you know my parents have been anxiously waiting for their daughter’s return. If Raina isn’t by their side, they won’t be able to hold on."
Adrian Grant took the understanding agreement.
With just one glance, he tossed it aside.
He told Ethan Everett, "I’ll sign the understanding agreement, but first, let Raina divorce Alaric Jennings and send Evelyn over."
