Chapter 184: _Poking His Nose In Dangerous Situations Elian’s POV
"What’s with the frown?" Axel tilted his head, squinting when he finally got in front of Elian. "Did... Something happened?" Elian blinked, shaking his head and finally smiling. "I’m... I’m sorry about that. Yeah, something happened. I..." He paused before he could say anything more, considering whether he should tell Axel about the cloaked figure he was chasing after leaving the indoor garden. On one hand, he’d have the Beta on the lookout in case something went wrong. On the other hand... He didn’t want to disturb Axel— [I know you’ve got to be fucking playing right now. What do you mean you don’t want to tell Axel what happened?] Elian sighed, closing his eyes for a few seconds before staring straight at Axel’s face. [You make it harder for me to protect you when you make these stupid decisions. Or no decisions at all!] Ugh... "Elian?" Axel grabbed his shoulder just then, forcing him back to reality. "You did that thing again. Spacing out." Elian forced an awkward smile. "Usually Lucian’s the one telling me that. Wait, speaking of which... Where is he?"
[Observe as the subject, an Omega Fruitcake, swerves away from the original topic like he’s got a bad case of dementia.] Elian’s face nearly flushed from embarrassment but he didn’t say anything, waiting for Axel to answer him. "Last I saw him, he was heading off to the aircraft we used in coming here." The Beta remarked, shrugging. "I guess he needed some space after what happened in the training hall." Elian felt an odd sense of guilt pressing on his chest just then, his mind reeling through what transpired in the training hall. He’d been using his mates like chess pieces once again because of some stupid mission that could’ve taken a bad turn. [A bad turn up your ass because of a potential orgy?] ’You’re a sicko.’ [And you’re spacing out again. But sure... Banter with the voice in your head. It’s not like you weren’t showing other signs of schizophrenia before me.] Elian’s fists curled but he hid them behind his back, taking a single step forward. His expression softened as he stared into Axel’s warm golden eyes. "Lucian believes I’m playing games with him. With all three of you." He whispered, his eyes flicking behind Axel briefly like he was scared the cloaked figure would pop up with a knife or something. He’s encountered way too many cloaked figures since his rebirth. "Are you playing..." Axel’s lips pressed into a thin line, his voice calm. "Are you playing us?" Elian’s heart skipped a beat when he heard those words roll off the Beta’s mouth. For a fleeting moment, he considered being open to Axel too. Open about— [Don’t even finish that internal monologue, Mother Theresa. For the umpteenth time, have you lost your mind?] Mother Theresa? "You’re taking too long to answer that question, Elian." Axel chuckled softly, placing his right hand on his cheek. Elian nearly melted at his touch, his heart warming up when he remembered how Axel was the only mate he ever truly felt safe with. He unknowingly sidetracked the one mate he’s always had a fat crush on. [It’s been established aeons ago that you have a kink for toxic men. So...] "I’m sorry..." Elian finally muttered, his eyelids fluttering as his smile brightened. "I... I would never play any of you. I guess I’m just afraid of the whole concept of being in lo..." He froze, a lump throbbing in his throat as if the word he was about to say was poison. Axel’s brows furrowed, clearly catching on to what he’d been about to say. But the Beta didn’t tease him about it; instead, he nodded slowly to signal he was listening. Gosh, he was such a green flag. "I was trying to say I’m afraid of the concept of having three mates. A fact which should’ve been established by now." Elian scratched the back of his neck with an awkward laugh. Axel kept his hand on his face, his fingers softly caressing him like he was the most precious thing on Solara.
"And I’m afraid of the concept of sharing you with any of them." Axel finally spoke with a heavy breath. "Seeing how comfortable you are here makes me... Jealous. Jealous that I couldn’t give you the same comfort." Elian’s eyes dimmed. They both stood there in silence, the only things audible to Elian being the sound of his own heartbeat and heavy breathing. But then— "This necklace..." Axel tilted his head, his fingers sliding from Elian’s cheek to his neck. The latter froze, his heart beat spiking at the sudden shift in the Beta’s countenance as he observed the necklace on his neck without touching it. "It... It was a gift from Kyren." Elian stuttered. Axel simply nodded slowly, not taking his eyes from the trinket for even a second. "I can tell... It’s a beautiful piece." That went on for a few more seconds before Axel finally withdrew his hand from him. "Anyway, you were about to tell me what was troubling you before I showed up here." Axel cleared his throat, staring curiously at him. Oh... Right! He almost forgot to tell him about the cloaked figure. [At this point, a lobotomy might not be so bad for you.] Elian ignored the system’s jab and faced Axel squarely, lowering his voice. "There was a cloaked figure lurking through the palace halls. I was following them but then... They disappeared." Axel frowned. "A cloaked figure? And you were following them?" The protectiveness in his voice was hard to miss, causing Elian to lower his head slightly. "I... I thought I could—" "You don’t go poking your nose in dangerous situations like that, Elian." Axel shook his head with a scolding tone. "What if the person had made a move to hurt you? Or worse?" [Told you so...] Elian remained silent, feeling like he was being scolded by his father and not his mate. Ew... Why did he think that?! "We need to inform Lord Kyren so he can tighten security." Axel snapped his fingers like that was some groundbreaking thing to do. However, before either of them could make a move, a golden bracelet on Axel’s right wrist flashed with a soft light. Elian dragged his eyes to the Beta’s wrist while the latter tapped on it once, bringing his ear close to it. "Hello?" Axel arched a brow, tilting slightly away from Elian. There was a short moment of silence, making Elian’s brows knit into a deep frown.
He could tell something was wrong. And soon enough, he found out what. "A–Axel..." Lucian’s voice cracked through the bracelet, sounding strained. Elian’s heart lurched while Axel quickly became alarmed. "Lucian? What is it? Where are you?" There was another pause. Elian’s pulse quickened, his body shivering with anxiety. Until— "Help... Me..." The line went dead after that, flickering with the sharp sound of static. And with the silence that followed, Elian suddenly felt like the world was spinning beneath his feet. Axel whipped his head back to him with a grim expression but he didn’t speak. He didn’t need to. "Lucian’s in danger..."
