Chapter 155: _We Aren’t Pushovers Lucian’s POV
His first instinct before the laser beam hit was to grab his sister and shove her to safety, using his body as a shield. BOOM! The blast hit, sending smoke and debris billowing off the makeshift stage. Lucian gritted his teeth as the ringing sound from the blast lingered in his eardrums. But then he opened his eyes, a chill running down his spine when he realised something. No... "Elowen!" His father cried out behind them. Lucian and Aurora turned their heads to the podium, dread surging through the former when he saw his mother lying on the floor. Her eyes were closed and her face smothered with ash. And on her stomach was a huge black scar left behind by the blast, blood staining her gown. The Alpha king crouched beside her, clutching her body close to himself. His lips parted with a plethora of emotions before rage finally burned through. "Cut the broadcast!" His father snapped his head to Axel who was still below the stage. "Cut it now!"
Lucian didn’t think twice, bolting toward his mother, leaving Aurora frozen with terror. He scanned his eyes through the courtyard, searching for the culprit while guards donned in golden armour rushed toward the stage from different corners of the palace grounds. "What happened?" One asked more to himself but soon gasped when he saw the scene on the stage. "Gods above." "The Luna Queen!" "Someone get a Palace medic!" Beta Axel ordered after turning off the holographic screen, rushing up the stage. Lucian’s fists curled as he continued searching for a hint of who’d done this. A trace of a scent. Anything. His wolf was howling with rage inside his soul and he’d be damned before he let— "Wait." He paused, narrowing his eyes on a tree in the western gardens. Right there on one of the branches was a figure, crouching low and watching everything unfolding on the stage. And not just any figure too. Lucian’s eyes widened when the moon’s light shone on the golden armour worn by the person. That plus the laser cannon he held, still steaming with smoke from a recent shooting. A palace guard? . Lucian’s anger reached a new peak, especially when the culprit made eye contact with him briefly before seemingly disappearing under the cover of a smoke bomb. "Lucian, why are you just standing there?!" The Alpha king snarled just then, his voice trembling. "Your mother—" Lucian didn’t wait for him to finish, jumping off the stage before he ran toward the western end of the palace grounds. He transformed into his wolf after taking a few steps, growling with a primal instinct in mind. Kill. He moved like a blur, arriving in the western gardens within a few seconds. His snout rose toward the night sky, his silver white fur blowing into the wind as he tried picking up a scent. It didn’t take long to find the scent he was searching for. Lucian moved again, this time sprinting toward the northern walls of the palace grounds. He got there and ignored the guards—who all seemed like they were on their way to check out the source of the laser blast. Fools. The culprit was good at fleeing a crime scene, no doubt, but Lucian could pick from his scent that he had scaled the walls and run off. Not for long. "Is... is that the Alpha Prince?" A guard spotted him and froze, staring with awe at the majesty of his wolf transformation. But Lucian ignored him completely, jumping on the grey wall, which was over twenty metres high, before he ran up it. His limbs easily handled the force of gravity until he got to the top of the wall, giving him a view of Moon Haven City.
This city was his hunting ground now. Moon Haven glittered under the moonlight, with roofs tiled in silver and blue, streets buzzing faintly with bright neon lights, and citizens still moving about, although a few glanced at the palace walls curiously. From up here, Lucian could see it all—the winding alleys, the moonlit courtyards, the chaos of citizens pouring into the streets after hearing the blast from the palace. And most importantly... HIM. ’Got you.’ he thought to himself before leaping off the wall, landing nimbly with a light thud on the tarred ground. He sped past the crowd, following the scent like a phantom... Until his eyes locked on the culprit who was about to step into an aether craft. ’I don’t think so!’ He jumped, howling before he pinned the bastard to the floor with his claws. "Argh!" The man yelled, struggling to move under the colossal weight of Lucian. The driver of the aether craft looked out of his window with both confusion and reverence, but Lucian’s attention was on the man who dared to attack his mother. "You!" He spoke through his fangs as his body shifted back to his human form. "You better start telling me who the fuck sent you or I swear I’ll rip your limbs so slowly that you’ll bite your tongue to fight the pain. You—" "I... I can’t." The man shook his head, coughing when Lucian’s hands tightened around his neck. His face reddened, his eyes teary. "They’ll... They said they’ll kill me if I say anything." Lucian furrowed his brows. They? People around stared from a distance, murmuring to themselves. Lucian got an ominous feeling just then. "Who was your original target?" He sneered, his claws itching to come out of his fingers. "The Alpha king? Me? Or did you succeed with the Luna Queen?" The man shook his head, closing his eyes like he was fighting not to speak. Suddenly, Lucian heard a beep sound coming from the man’s utility belt. He glanced down and froze when he saw the black box device with a blinking red light fastened to the belt. He leaned down, fingertips brushing the black box, feeling the faint, hungry pulse of a timer under his skin. "I’m sorry..." The man croaked, his voice raw with regret. Lucian’s instincts went into overdrive as he jumped backwards at the same moment that the device made another beep sound. BOOM! An explosion spread from the device, consuming the man in flames and sending dust, blood and debris everywhere. As well as a deafening shockwave. People screamed in a panic, running for safety while Lucian tumbled on the ground until he landed several meters away, his chest heavy from the pressure.. He coughed from the smoke but his teeth ground when he realised the truth staring at him in the form of smoke. The palace guards were still very much compromised. Someone out there was powerful enough to make their spies kill themselves rather than confessing the truth. The Dark Hand was his main suspect... But why would they be after his mother?
He grunted, getting on his feet and dusting his body, staring at the smoke left behind by the explosion. But alas, the madness tonight was far from over. "Good evening, people of Evaros." A voice echoed throughout the city like a god. Lucian frowned, raising his head to the sky. Hovering over the city was a large holographic projection of a continent-wide broadcast. Not one from his father. But from Kyren Nochthane. "Hours ago, Arcadia launched an attack on an important border city of the Dark Lands." Kyren continued, donned in black battle armour. "Now, I’m no expert on history... But to me, that’s basically a call for attention. For war." Lucian’s chest heaved from the adrenaline rush from the chase and also from watching the rogue king being so smug in front of billions of people across the continent. "As sovereign of the Dark Lands, I come with a simple message." Kyren’s voice became cold, his crimson eyes glinting with a predatory light as he looked straight at the cameras. "The Dark Lands will not ignore this attack. Arcadia has forced our hands and rest assured... We will prove that we aren’t pushovers in this continent." He leaned closer, his lips curling into a smirk. "That’s a promise. And I’ll make sure to fulfil it with brimstone and fire. No one threatens the Rogue King and goes untouched." Fuck... He finally did it. The Rogue King declared war.
