Chapter 172: _Barking Up The Wrong Tree Lucian’s POV
"Hold on..." Beta Axel whispered with a plethora of emotions on his face, tilting his head at the corpse attached to the balcony railing. "You’ve had how many spies in the Dark Lands all this while?" Lucian stood by the room door, rolling his eyes after hearing the question. "Oh, please. You’re acting like my father doesn’t have spies in this territory as well. Heck, Lord Kyren—" "When will you begin to realise that you’re not as powerful as these two men?" Axel spun around, clasping his hands in front of his face in an almost pleading gesture. "Stop playing these dangerous games, Lucian." The Alpha Prince scoffed, squinting his eyes as he stepped away from the room door slowly. "Are you here to help me dispose of this body or to lecture me?" He queried, keeping his eyes locked on the Beta. "Something isn’t right either. It would be impossible for the Dark Hand to know the location of my room here." . Axel flung an arm into the air. "Yes, but it would be easy for almost anyone in this city to be informed of our arrival. Finding—" "I’m not dumb, Beta." Lucian pushed on flatly, his footsteps echoing as he inched closer. When he finally got in front of the golden-eyed Beta, he kept his chin raised and his gaze locked sharper than a blade. "I never argued if you were, Alpha Prince." Axel countered, arching a brow. "Are you going to get to a point now? Or..." The attack was too coincidental. Too clean.

It was as if the Dark Hand was trying to warn him that their influence was far deeper than any of them imagined.
Far closer too...
"That maid getting killed by a fail-safe curse after confessing was one thing." Lucian rubbed his communication ring, a habit to keep himself grounded. "But fishing out my spy and dropping his brutally murdered body in front of my room? That’s too suspicious."
Axel furrowed his brows, glancing back at the body on the balcony for a few seconds before turning his head back to Lucian.
"Suspicious in what way?" He drew.
Lucian kept his eyes fixed on him, his lips curling into a smirk. "I believe you know what I’m driving at, Beta. Deep down. You’re just afraid to—"
"Afraid?" Axel chimed, his pitch filled with scorn. "No, being afraid would be reserved for someone guilty. I don’t know what you’re driving at, Lucian. But if it’s what I feel you’re trying to insinuate... You’re barking up the wrong tree."
Lucian raised the index finger of his right hand, about to say something harsh and daring, when a bone-chilling feeling crawled through his being.
He froze, his eyes darting to the balcony just in time to witness something nauseating.
The body of the murdered spy, still covered in black veins all over, moved. It didn’t just move but slowly raised its head, its once empty and dead eyes shining with black orbs that locked on him.
"Fucking... Fuck..." He cursed breathlessly, forcing Axel to turn around as well.
They both stepped back slowly as the reanimated zombie clawed its way forward, first falling on the ground sluggishly before rising on its feet.
A guttural and unnatural growl rumbled from its chest, black blood oozing out of its mouth alongside the sound.
"That dead body is flowing with the same curse that killed the maid and many other victims." Axel sneered, pulling out the handle of his plasma sword. "If we’re getting rid of it, we’ll be doing it swiftly and permanently."
He glanced at Lucian one last time before a blazing golden light flashed out of the hilt, burning with the plasma energy and forming the shape of a sword.
The zombie snarled, crouching a little before charging at them.
Lucian clenched his fists, his original shock and terror simmering away until his survival instincts bubbled through. But before he could make a move, Axel was already upon the creature with his sword raised.
The Beta sent a sharp slash at the creature’s neck, clearly aiming to go for the kill.
But the zombie was surprisingly agile and fast, spinning erratically on its feet and dodging the slash. Sadly for it, the blade still managed to sear past its shoulder, causing it to screech in pain.
Lucian snapped out of his reverie again, clenching his jaw.
That spy wasn’t nameless. He was a man he personally hand-picked years ago.
Haruk.
The fact that he was dead was already brutal and unnerving enough... But turning his body into a zombie machine?
"Lucian, a little help here?" Axel grunted just then, struggling when the zombie grabbed the blazing blade of the sword.
The creature sneered and attempted to bite Axel several times, its mouth foaming with more black blood until it all pooled underneath its feet.
Lucian didn’t even want to know what would happen if it managed to bite one of them.
He let his aura burst through his fists before bolting forward.
"Axel, duck!"
The Beta backed away from the zombie, leaving his sword in its palms before rolling away from it.
Lucian raised his right fist in the air, landing a devastating punch square on its jaw, overflowing with the silver energy of his aura.
The zombie’s head was blown into nothing but blood bits, leaving its body wobbling helplessly.
But Axel was quick, getting up and grabbing his sword from its hands before piercing straight into its heart. The creature’s bloody neck stump hissed and spurted with blood one last time before the body crumbled into ash.
Lucian’s chest heaved heavily as his eyes flitted to Beta Axel. The latter was also breathing heavily but his expression was more controlled.
Too calm for someone who almost had his face chewed up.
Yes, calmness was a normal reaction from the Beta. But this time, it oddly felt like someone who knew more than he was letting on.
"I guess we don’t need to worry much about getting rid of the body." Axel sighed, the plasma energy withdrawing out of existence, letting him keep the hilt in his back pocket.
Suddenly, Lucian’s communication ring and Axel’s communication bracelets pinged with a notification, forcing them to stare at each device.
It was a message.
From Elian.
Lucian frowned, surprised that Elian even owned a communication device. But what shook his core more was the message Elian sent.
"Help."
He glanced at Axel who had the same look in his eyes as he lowered his bracelet.
"Our mate might be under the Dark Hand’s radar," Axel mumbled, his voice filled with dread.
Lucian swallowed hard, unable to get rid of the lump in his throat. "Then we need to find him. Fast."
