Chapter 129: _Wife Him Up Lucian’s POV
"Where the hell are you, Kyren?" As soon as those words came from his lips, he heard the room door creak open. He looked over his shoulder, squinting at first— Until Kyren himself walked in with a plain expression. No flicker of anything that could point him out as guilty of something. No hesitant shift in his eyes. Just... Plain. Lucian subconsciously thought of fleeing or hiding before he spotted him but he knew damn well that the rogue king would sniff him out easily. So why bother? However, when Kyren’s gaze locked on him, his crimson orbs flared with a colder light than usual. As if that wasn’t enough, the room lights flickered, the shadows seemingly shifting unnaturally. "You," Kyren muttered coldly, closing the door behind him as he walked into the room. "Your family and your shady shenanigans are really starting to make me regret not dragging Elian back to the Dark Lands when I had the chance." Lucian’s expression darkened when he heard those words.
There it was again. There was the unfiltered arrogance coming from a man who only came into Elian’s life TODAY and thought he had some claim over him. Like he could just take him as if the rest of them meant nothing. Well, news flash. "Starting this conversation with a threat wouldn’t be the right way to navigate this, Lord Kyren," Lucian spoke firmly, his fists curling at his sides. "Where were you? And what the heck did you do to Elian to make him sleep so deeply?" Kyren blinked, seeming surprised at first. But the surprise in his eyes wasn’t an "oh, fuck, I’ve been caught" kinda look. It was amusement. Like someone watching a child making a fool of himself. That bloody bastard! "Your father did say I can make myself feel comfortable." Kyren began with what Lucian thought was a convenient lie. Scratch that, he KNEW it was a lie. "Make yourself comfortable by sneaking around?" Lucian sneered, his fingers curling so hard on his palm that his claws almost came out. "Don’t play games with me, Kyren. You’re up to something." Suddenly, Kyren chuckled darkly, raising his hands and clapping two times. Lucian frowned, wondering what the heck was funny about what he just said. Truth be told, he was holding back from denting the bastard’s face with a punch. "Playing games? Up to something?" Kyren repeated his words as if he were deaf. "Please, Alpha Prince. If anything, I suggest you take those suspicions to someone else. Perhaps... Those closest to you?" Lucian’s eyelids fluttered as Kyren finally got in front of him, maintaining eye contact. His red eyes were goading, daring him to do something stupid. But Lucian held on to every inch of restraint he could muster, his jaw clenching. "What the fuck do you mean by that?" Kyren grinned, shaking his head before he raised his right hand. Lucian’s eyes widened alertly, his muscles straining in preparation for whatever trick he might have. But nothing happened. Instead, Kyren placed his palm on his shoulder and gently shoved him aside. "I hope you find that out for yourself soon enough. In the meantime, you’ve successfully disturbed my... Sorry. Our mate’s slumber after all the stress he’s been facing these last few days." Lucian blinked with confusion at first until he turned around, his gaze landing on the bed just in time to witness Elian shifting in his sleep, his blonde white hair falling over his eyes. Kyren parted the strands calmly, keeping his eyes focused on Elian... While Lucian stood aside like some unwanted aunty. "Ugh..." Elian groaned with a yawn, slowly propping himself with his elbows and rubbing his forehead. "That was some heavy sleep." Lucian didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. He’d called Elian’s name. Stood by his side. Touched his hair.
Yet none of that had as much as made him sneeze or at least shift a bit in his sleep. His wolf growled in his soul, prowling with agitation as Elian’s eyes first flicked to Kyren before landing on him. "Lucian?" Elian frowned, tilting his head ever so slightly, as if his appearance here was beyond unexpected. Maybe it was... "What... What’s going on?" Elian asked with suspicion in his voice, looking between Lucian and Kyren. Lucian parted his lips to speak but Kyren beat him to it. "Oh, the Alpha Prince was just worried about you and decided to come check on you while I was out searching for a library," Kyren remarked with a dismissive wave, sitting beside Elian on the bed and placing his left arm on the bedpost. "His care for you is adorable... As much as he tries hiding it." Lucian’s face heated up with both embarrassment and anger. His care is... ADORABLE? Was this guy fucking insane? "Oh, I didn’t realise I slept so deeply," Elian whispered with an awkward tone, a small smile curling his lips as he stared at Lucian. "Thanks, Lucian." The Alpha Prince couldn’t even force himself to smile, merely staring at Elian for a beat before he glared daggers at Kyren. The Rogue king merely gave him a mischievous wink, casually brushing strands of Elian’s hair. But before anything else could happen— A knock sounded on the room door, forcing Lucian to turn his eyes in that direction. The door opened and Axel was the one who stepped in, his golden eyes scanning the place before finally trailing to the bed. "Ah, Beta Axel." Kyren blurted with an unreadable tone. "Looks like everyone’s here for the party. Although, I must admit. You have a very annoying way of popping up. Like a garden rat or something." Axel’s expression twisted with clear annoyance while Lucian rubbed the bridge of his nose. "I came here to check on my mate, Lord Kyren," Axel spoke smoothly despite his frown, opening the door without stepping in. "An act you should be familiar with if you grew up with love around you." Silence. The awkwardness of the silence stretched, making Lucian feel like an odd sore in the room. And even though he wasn’t looking at Kyren right now, he could tell that Axel’s words might’ve somehow triggered him. "Elian, you’re okay, right?" Axel asked, his voice warmer now like he didn’t just read the rogue king to filth. Lucian glanced back at Elian whose lips were parted at first until he nodded. "I... I am, Axel. Thank you."
Lucian’s lips pressed into a thin line, reluctance eating at his skin. But he knew leaving was imminent. "Alpha Prince," Axel called with a solemn tone just then, forcing Lucian to tear his gaze away from Elian and toward him. "We discovered something while you were... Well, here." Lucian drew in a deep breath, holding back from looking at Elian one last time. He straightened his spine and walked toward the door, his boots padding softly. When he and Axel were finally out of the room and shut the door behind them, the Beta fixed his eyes on him. "We didn’t discover anything. I lied. That witch’s damn suicide is a dead end." He let out a sigh. Lucian clicked his tongue at the Beta but before he could say anything rash, the golden boy brought out a flat holographic screen and handed it to him. "A message from the Eastern Wolves council," Axel revealed before his eyes could even skim the content of the screen. "They’re coming to the palace for unstated reasons next month. On the night of the full moon masquerade ball." Lucian’s hands shook with looming dread, his throat suddenly tense. Oh, the reason wasn’t "unstated". He knew why they’d want to show up here. ’Looks like you’ll need to wife up our mate faster than you thought,’ his wolf howled excitedly in his mind, adding to the looming dread.
