Chapter 169: Whispers of the Wisps The Catacombs loomed before them, a chamber of eerie wonders. The air was thick with dampness and decay, and flickering torches cast spooky shadows on the ancient, moss-covered walls.

"Yet another catacomb," Rever muttered, his voice barely audible. "They certainly have a knack for creepy dungeons, don’t they?"

"There are dungeons with better views," Victor remarked, "but unfortunately, this isn’t one of them."

With the key in Victor’s hands, they ventured into the nightmare chamber, bracing themselves for the horrors within.

Their exploration led them into the King’s Special Torture Chamber, a place where suffering and sorrow had been meticulously crafted.

The air reeked of the horrible fate that had befallen the king’s victims. Amidst the bloodstained tools and twisted instruments of agony, a chilling tale unfolded – the king’s trusted chef had conspired to poison him, leading to the vengeful ruler’s gruesome demise.

In this macabre setting, dozens of Will-o’-wisps floated menacingly.

The chateau’s ghostly Will-o’-wisps were dangerous, enraged souls, appearing as haunting apparitions that terrified even the bravest adventurers.

"Don’t touch them," Victor warned, his gaze focused on Rever.

"What? Why are you always looking at me? I only messed up one time, okay. And I won’t touch them even if you told me so," Rever protested, his tone defensive.

Yuzuro sighed and mused to herself. One time, but it almost cost them their life and level.

"They can drain the life force of even the strongest warriors with a single touch," Victor explained.

"So, what’s the plan?" Yuzuro inquired. "They don’t seem to be attacking us directly."

"We need to navigate through the door without touching those wisps," Victor replied. "Just a brush against them could cause serious damage, so be careful."

Xin withdrew his golems, realizing their bulky forms would only impede their progress.

"I’m ready," Rever said, stretching his head. "Lead the way."

Shadow took point, meticulously checking for traps before they could take their step.

Xin couldn’t help but wish that Pudding had the same capability. However, Pudding was already hard at work, significantly reducing his crafting time for the golems.

Xin sighed, accepting that he couldn’t have all the bugs in the world.

The atmosphere in the King’s Special Torture Chamber was stifling, filled with the sickly scent of decay and the ominous glow of the Will-o’-wisps, flickering like malevolent stars in the darkness.

The party stood at the entrance, their eyes fixed on the floating wisps, which seemed to move with an eerie, almost sentient, purpose.

Victor’s stern voice cut through the tense silence, his words laden with caution.

"Keep your distance and watch your step. They’re unpredictable, so we can’t afford to let our guard down."

Rever, however, seemed momentarily distracted. His gaze wandered, and his attention wavered for just a second.

In that moment of distraction, one of the wisps veered closer, its ethereal glow reflecting in Rever’s eyes.

Xin’s voice rang out in alarm. "Rever, watch out."

Rever snapped back to attention, his eyes widening in realization. He jumped backward just in time, narrowly avoiding the wisp’s touch.

The wisp, angered by the intrusion, flickered erratically before darting away, its luminous tail leaving a trail of ghostly light in its wake.

"That was too close," Yuzuro gasped, her hand pressed to her chest. "Rever, you almost died the second time around."

Rever nodded gravely, his eyes never leaving the wisps. "This dungeon really is different from the previous two. One wrong step, and you’re dead."

"Now you know," Victor told him with a slight laugh.

With heightened awareness, the party pressed forward, their movements deliberate and cautious. They weaved through the wisps, each member acutely aware of the danger that lurked just inches away.

Shadow skillfully guided them, ensuring they avoided the wisps’ unpredictable paths and ensuring that no traps were on their steps.

Step by careful step, they maneuvered through the wisps, their progress slow but steady.

The wisps, sensing their presence, continued to drift and dance, their movements graceful yet sinister.

Minutes passed, each one feeling like an eternity as they navigated the treacherous path.

Finally, they emerged on the other side, the wisps fading into the darkness behind them. A collective sigh of relief echoed through the chamber.

"Good work, everyone," Victor praised, his voice filled with genuine relief. "Let’s not take any more unnecessary risks. Stay focused, and let’s continue on our way."

Rever’s voice cut through the uneasy silence, his curiosity evident. "I wonder what awaits us in the next room."

Yuzuro’s response held a hint of apprehension. "Honestly, I’d rather not find out."

"I’m willing to bet the challenges will only get tougher as we go deeper," Rever continued, his tone contemplative.

Yuzuro’s stomach tightened with anxiety while Xin remained silent, his thoughts hidden behind a stoic expression.

The next room revealed itself as the Maids’ Resting Room, a hidden sanctuary within the chateau’s shadows.

The chamber exuded tranquility, its atmosphere softened by the flickering candlelight.

Lavender scented the air, carrying the essence of moments spent in peaceful respite away from the castle’s prying eyes.

Within the Maids’ Resting Room lay an unexpected treasure trove. Among delicate lace and ornaments, a selection of sparkling jewelry stood out.

Adorned with valuable diamonds and exquisite craftsmanship, these gifts were valued at 30,000 gil, a testament to the maids’ gratitude for their diligent work.

Victor’s keen eyes caught sight of a note in the room, its words cryptic yet intriguing:

. "In shifting winds, a whispered tale’s release,

Where southern secrets merge with eastern peace,

Seek the path where sun and shadows entwine,

Adventure awaits where these directions align."

A heavy silence settled over the group as they exchanged glances. It was Rever who voiced the question lingering in everyone’s mind.

"Should we take these treasures?"

Rever learned a valuable lesson from the Lanternal encounter, and hesitated. As much as he loved treasures, the memory of that terrifying experience lingered, making him prioritize his safety and level over anything else.

"Can Shadow detect traps on the items?" Midnight Duchess asked which was unusual because she was mostly quiet. "Can it sniff out any potential dangers from treasures?"

Victor’s face fell and he glared at Midnight Duchess. "No, treasure traps don’t work like dungeon traps. There’s no way to detect them without directly interacting with them."
