Chapter 139: Race Against the Closing Door In the midst of the fiery chaos, Xin was focused solely on reaching the exit, oblivious to the looming threat descending upon him.
The relentless swarm of Magmins silently circled above him like vengeful spirits. Their fiery bodies emitted an eerie, flickering glow that contrasted sharply against the dim, crimson-lit chamber. Their tiny wings beat rapidly, carrying them closer to their unsuspecting prey.
Just when Xin began to sense the intense heat radiating from the approaching Magmins, a sudden shift in the atmosphere caught his attention.
It was as if a shiver ran down his spine, and he couldn’t help but glance upward, his eyes widening in realization.
But before he could react or bring forth the magic held within the Shell of Oceanic Power in his inventory, an item he had acquired in the Newbie Island –– an unexpected and chilling presence manifested.
Death itself materialized, a haunting figure of indescribable otherworldly power.
Death was cloaked in an endless abyss of obsidian, a void so deep that it seemed to devour the very light around it. The cloak billowed as if it was a piece of the eternal night, moving as though it had a life of its own.
Death’s visage was an enigma, veiled in a shifting veil of shadow. Its face remained concealed, hidden behind an impenetrable curtain of darkness. No eyes, no features, only an unsettling emptiness that seemed to peer into the very soul of those who gazed upon it.
Around Death’s form, a tapestry of ethereal mist writhed, an ever-moving shroud that whispered of mortality’s ceaseless dance. It trailed behind the figure like a sinister specter, marking its presence with a cold, deathly chill.
In Death’s skeletal hand, a scythe of pure obsidian gleamed malevolently. Its blade was impossibly sharp, and it seemed to absorb the light, casting a void-like shadow wherever it moved.
The scythe moved with supernatural grace, effortlessly slicing through the swarm of Magmins descending upon Xin.
The moment the scythe struck, a wave of darkness swept over the Magmins. Their fiery bodies flickered and then vanished into nothingness as though they had never existed. Not a single ember remained, only an eerie, chilling silence.
Death turned its shrouded gaze toward Xin, the darkness where its eyes should be seemingly fixating on him. It conveyed no emotion, no discernible intent, only an unsettling sense of inevitability.
In the presence of Death, Xin stood frozen, the spell within the Shell of Oceanic Power forgotten. He couldn’t tear his gaze away from the figure that had appeared so suddenly, saving him from a certain demise.
A sudden delicate touch of cool fingertips, like a gentle whisper in the midst of a cacophonous storm, brushed against his shoulder. It was as if a veil of calm had descended upon the chaos.
Xin’s senses returned, and he jolted back into focus by that faint touch. He turned his head, and his eyes met Midnight Duchess who appeared by his side.
Her face remained concealed beneath a veil of shadow, but her eyes, glinting with an eerie crimson luminescence, held an aura of both calm and authority.
"It’s alright," Midnight Duchess whispered, her voice like a soft breeze rustling through darkened branches. "I’ll create a path. You should focus solely on reaching the exit."
Xin nodded, his gratitude unspoken but deeply felt.
In response to Midnight Duchess’s unspoken command, Death moved. Its obsidian scythe gleamed menacingly as it sliced through the Magmins that had blocked the way.
The fiery creatures, once a dire threat, were reduced to mere wraith-like embers in its wake.
Xin watched in awe as the path cleared before him, the remaining Magmins recoiling from the overpowering presence of Death.
The spectral figure seemed to be one of Midnight Duchess’s skill, a harbinger of doom at her beck and call and it was clear that she was the one who saved him.
Xin, Rever, and Yuzuro reached the edge of the looming door, their breathless journey through the chamber of fiery chaos seemed to culminate at this critical moment.
Their faces were flushed with exertion, and their eyes reflected a mixture of relief and concern as they stood on the precipice of the exit.
It was a massive stone door, ancient and imposing, covered in intricate carvings that told stories of forgotten epochs. The door was now slowly grinding shut.
Victor was still locked in a fierce duel with the Azer, and appeared as a silhouette against the fiery backdrop.
Midnight Duchess remained at the rear, her focused was on keeping the Magmins at bay.
Rever shouted towards Victor and Midnight Duchess, his words laced with concern and urgency. "Victor! Midnight Duchess! Get in here, quick!" He waved frantically at the narrowing gap of the slowly closing door.
Victor managed to disengage for a brief moment. He sprinted towards the closing door, fire and sweat glistening on his face, every muscle strained from the battle.
Midnight Duchess zoomed towards the door, as well, but the Azer had blocked her path.
The massive stone door creaked ominously as it drew closer to its final seal.
As the door inched closer to being sealed shut, Rever’s voice rose to a fevered pitch. "Midnight Duchess! Hurry! It’s closing!"
"S-she won’t make it!" Yuzuro couldn’t look and covered her eyes.
Midnight Duchess couldn’t move from away from the Azer. It stood like an immovable sentinel, determined to thwart her every move.
The stone door was now perilously close to shutting, added another layer of urgency to the situation. Midnight Duchess was trapped, and the door’s relentless descent threatened to cut her off from the others.
If she couldn’t get out from there, then she’d be trapped with the Azer in an endless battle until she died or until Xin and the other successfully completed the quest.
On the other side of the door, Xin watched with mounting concern as Midnight Duchess faced off against the Azer. He knew that time was running out, and her safety was at stake.
With a wave of his hand, he commanded the golems to step forward.
The golems responded to Xin’s command, and moved towards the closing door without a single thought. Their massive stone forms clashed with the door’s imposing surface, preventing it from sealing shut.
The golems exerted their colossal strength, holding the door open just enough for Midnight Duchess to pass through.
